Meditation and Me

When I was in college I took a Tai Chi class. It came at a good time, the second semester of my final year, when I was preparing my thesis. Each class began with a 15 minute meditation to clear the mind and prepare for our practice. I loved the class and the Tai Chi movements, but never practiced again after college. What I did go back to was meditation - that was 15 years ago. I began using meditation as a relaxation technique, but didn’t practice regularly until 9 years ago, when I found myself at home all day with a 3 yr old son and 18 month old daughter. Destressing was a must, and once or twice a month was not enough.

I continue to practice meditation and find it deeply satisfying, in fact it just gets better and better. I’ve never studied any particular style, and don’t think it’s necessary to do so. Of all the wonderful things meditation has given me, the ones that stand out are a deep sense of self awareness, balance, inner peace, and connection to life.

In addition to all the ‘feel good’ aspects of meditation, recent studies in neuroplasticity have shown that when we meditate we actually change the makeup of the brain. Just like working out builds muscles, meditating builds up certain areas of the brain. The results most often found are increased attention, decreased stress, and an awareness of and greater control over our emotional reactions.

I am thrilled to teach meditation and to incorporate it into my coaching practice. I teach meditation to children, teens and adults, in groups or privately. Together with Andrea Grace I have formed Meditation for the Imagination, offering classes to children and families.
