A few months ago a client of mine gave me the “Earthing” book (Ober, Sinatra and Zucker, 2010) and dvd (both of which came free with the purchase of an Earthing Kit), and I was intrigued. The book is full of interesting information on the discovery of health benefits that resulted from reconnecting to the earth’s energy, so that free radicals in the body would be neutralized. This is said to reduce inflammation in the body and balance cortisol levels, essentially decreasing stress and increasing relaxation, which helps to regulate the immune system response. Many people claim to have had positive health benefits, not the least of which is better sleep, from the use of earthing sheets and pads, and some say they have recovered completely from chronic conditions.
Earthing essentially means grounding the body by reconnecting to the earth’s energy, in the same way that appliances are grounded by the third prong on the outlet. This can be done by walking barefoot on the ground (not on concrete or other surfaced floors), by lying down on the ground, or by using an ‘earthing’ product that connects to a grounding wire and is run through a standard indoor electrical outlet, or is connected to a grounding rod that is placed in the ground outside.
Having developed a keen sensitivity to the movement of energy in my body and my client’s bodies, I was curious to find out what it would feel like to lie down on an Earthing sheet. I also wanted to know if this was something that might be good for some people, and not so good for others, which can often be the case, depending on a person’s energetic constitution.
So I bought the basic kit, which comes with a half sheet and a grounding pad. They did not disappoint in terms of quickly moving energy! Both had an immediate effect on my system when I used them - the pad under my feet and the sheet on the full length of my bed, head to toe. The sheet felt a bit gentler than the pad, which still feels almost buzzy when I use it and can cause an unpleasant reaction in my system.
Even though these two products serve the same purpose, they really do have distinctly different effects, so I’ll talk about them separately. First, the sheet. I love this sheet. That’s all. I never want to sleep without it again. As far back as I can remember I’ve been a light sleeper, waking every time I turn over and at even the slightest noise - the breathing of the person next to me, barking dogs outside my closed window and two streets over, etc. I would estimate that in the past I slept well and felt truly rested about 10% of the time. Sleeping on this sheet, I feel really rested when I wake up at least 70% of the time.
As for the pad, I tried it under my feet while at the computer a few times, but it caused what we call in Eden Energy Medicine, “Triple Warmer reactivity”. That means my Triple Warmer meridian (governs fight or flight response) went into alarm mode, and as a result I felt worse. Now, it is possible to get out of TW reactivity and calm the system, and after a few rounds of using the pad and calming the system, the reactivity stopped, but then started again the next time I used it. So I’ve decided not to use the pad for the time being and to stick with the sheet.
In addition to my own use, I’ve used a plush throw with clients during sessions and each time they’ve commented on how relaxed they feel. There’s a certain calm to the system after earthing that I notice in clients as well. To me it feels the same way I feel when I’ve spent a day on the beach – a ‘good’ tired, refreshed and deeply relaxed.
Beyond my own experience, I wanted to find out what other energetically sensitive people had experienced with these products, so I put the question out to a forum of Energy Medicine practitioners, and it turned out many of them have used these and swear by them. There were also some who said these products are just too much for their systems, and tend to ‘blow the circuits,’ but the majority of responses were favorable.
I’m hesitant to recommend products to clients, or to sound like I’m endorsing a particular product, but because these have a 30 day money back guarantee (they aren’t cheap), and the potential to do a lot of good, I don’t feel uncomfortable saying that it’s certainly worth giving them a try. There are some amazing healing stories from people with chronic issues of all kinds who’ve used them, and if nothing else they could just be the best sleep aid ever invented!
1. Stop trying to be perfect and be unique
If you are still functioning under the delusion that perfection exists, wake up!
It doesn’t! Being imperfect is a beautiful thing, it’s like the difference between an exquisitely
handcrafted piece of artwork and a mass produced item you might find at
Walmart. One is unique and intriguing, the other is boring.
2. Stop caring about what others think
When you boil it down, you are either living for yourself, or living for others, who,
incidentally, may not even be aware of you or your actions.
3. Do more of what you love
This one speaks for itself, it is so obvious, so life changing, and sadly, so overlooked.
4. Do less of what you dislike
The obvious and often overlooked counterpart to tip number 3.
5. Spend quality time with people you love
Relationships with people you love (who love you back) are foundational to emotional wellness.
Feed them and you will feel better!
6. Practice gratitude
Practicing gratitude lights us up on the inside, and literally lights up the self-healing energies in your
body. These same energy circuits connect us to true joy and a deep sense of well-being.
It’s no mystery why being grateful makes us happier and healthier!
7. Focus on effort over achievement
It’s too easy to overlook the amount of work we put into something and the growth we achieve from it when we don’t get the results we want. This is especially relevant in parenting. If we teach our children that the only value is in the outcomes they will often give up without even trying. But if we emphasize that we are proud of the effort they put forth regardless of the results, they will be encouraged to repeat the process the next time they face a challenge.
8. Take good care of yourself
You take good care of your kids, your pets, your plants, your yard – but are you taking the same good care of yourself? Do you see to it that you eat three nutritious meals every day, don’t watch too much tv, exercise and get fresh air on a regular basis, and get plenty of sleep every night? In short, are doing what
you should to be healthy, happy and thrive?
9. Keep your energy balanced
This is so easy, just practice Donna Eden’s 10 minute Daily Energy Routine. When your energy is balanced you just feel good!
Take advantage of any excuse to celebrate life – birthdays, anniversaries, good report cards, professional accomplishments, holidays, Fridays, a beautiful Sunday afternoon with nothing to do, etc. Celebrations don’t have to be loud and accompanied by balloons or alcoholic beverages, they can also be quiet and sweet, like walking hand in hand with your child down a quiet path in the woods, quietly celebrating being together.
Iheard this from my coach this morning - 'you are always only one thought away from changing your life!' She's right, of course. But how do I bridge the gap between where I am and the one thought that will change my life??
What is that one thought and why is it so elusive? Has my life changed since this morning, when it entered my awareness? That one thought has been circulating...and continues on the spinning merry-go-round of my mind.
I know where I am - stuck, in an old pattern. I know where I want to be - free from that old pattern. Simple enough. But I can't quite seem to get my leg across from standing in stuck to standing in free - where is that darn thought
that will take me there?
Maybe it's the other way around. Maybe I'm already there, and it's the thought that doesn't let me see it, or in this case, the series of thoughts, that keep obscuring my view. Those are the thoughts that say 'too risky,' 'back up!' and 'careful, you might just get what you want.' These thoughts remind me of some deep belief that this place is not safe - too open, too free, too completely unhindered and alive...too good to be true. Wait, that's it! I've found it - the thought that acts like a straight-jacket, that sinks my foot in the mud of stuckness - TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
I am one thought away from changing my life - and the new thought is...TOO FREE TO CARE...how about you? What one thought would change your life today?
